Biggest Growth Mindset Misconception

In May it is officially Star Wars Day so you may be thinking 'what the heck has that got to do with developing a growth mindset?'

Well, it's probably the biggest misconception of Carol Dweck's work that we have come across.  If you go searching growth mindset  the majority of resources/blogs start 'some people are what we call fixed mindset and some people are growth mindset'. We've even seen this interpreted using Darth Vader and Yoda, guess which is perceived as which mindset? in the face) no! Categorising or labelling learners is not helpful. No-one is 100% fixed the same as no-one is 100% growth, we are ALL a mix of both mindsets, it's where we choose to spend our time that often defines the progress we make and how we feel about ourselves.

When becoming mindset aware you invite yourself to change your thought processes to experience a more rational, logical perspective. Social media has deemed our Fixed Mindset as bad, a shameful admission, something to steer away from and the Growth Mindset as good, what we should have and claim to be, so Yoda holds the crown. It's almost as if the two mindset are at war with each other, just like in Star Wars. We must combat the evil threat that is locked into our minds!

Getting friendly with your fixed mindset and changing your relationship with it is where the journey starts and those small nudges as you invite yourself to become growth orientated is what makes the difference.

It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you're not. ~ Denis Waitley
